A herbalist cum spiritualist who defrauded a mason on the pretext that he could conjure or double his money for him was on Friday granted a bail of GH¢ 8,000 cedis with two sureties to be justified. King Sonusu pleaded not guilty to the charges of defrauding and death threats but was convicted on his plea for resisting arrest and causing unlawful damage. He was sentenced to a fine of GH¢300 cedis or 12 months’ imprisonment in default. The accused has refunded the cost of the damaged shirt of a police officer and would re-appear on July 27, 2008. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) George Abavelim prosecuting said the complainant Frank Nartey, a mason and King Sonusu, a spiritualist both live at Nungua near the beach. He said about six months ago, Nartey was facing financial difficulties and decided to sell his house. Sonusu expressed interest in the house and convinced Nartey that he would be able to give him more money than he needed by conjuring or doubling his money for him. He said the accused then demanded various sums of money totaling GH¢7,140 cedis from Nartey to buy lavender, gold, two rams and three cows to pacify the gods. He said the accused was not able to fulfil his promise and was still demanding more money from the complainant. ASP Abavelim said Nartey later realised that he had been defrauded by the accused. He said the complainant went with one Kennedy Amekudzi, a witness in the case, to collect his money from the accused but he threatened to shoot them. A complaint was lodged with the police and when the accused was invited to the CID Headquarters, he resisted arrest and in the process tore the shirt of the case officer. He said a search was conducted in his room and a single barrel shot gun and a sword were found.
